Newcastle United strolled past Southampton with a 2-1 win on Thursday at St. Mary’s Stadium. Soton were hoping to get something from this game, following a previous defeat to Aston Villa. Newcastle were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. After today’s result, Soton and Newcastle currently occupy 9th and 14th spots in the table, with 35 points and 31 points respectively after 21 matches.

Soton started the first half well, thanks to Stuart Armstrong finding the net, 25 minutes in. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Chris Wood equalised for The Magpies at the 32 minute mark, which brought Eddie Howe’s squad level at 1-1 at the half time break

Newcastle started the second half with an intensified spirit, with Bruno Guimaraes finding the net, at 52 minutes, which sealed the victory for the visitors.

Soton brought on Adam Armstrong, Shane Long and Moussa Djenepo for Armando Broja, Oriol Romeu and Mohamed Elyounoussi. Newcastle brought on Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Javi Manquillo, to replace Bruno Guimaraes, Ryan Fraser and Emil Krafth.

There were bookings for Jan Bednarek from Soton. For Newcastle, Jacob Murphy saw yellow.

Soton will play at home against Watford, while Newcastle will face Chelsea away.
