Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea: The Magpies beat beleagured Blues at St James’ Park

Newcastle United strolled past Chelsea with a 1-0 win on Saturday at St James’ Park. Newcastle were looking to pick up points after winning their previous two games in the league. The most recent was against the Southampton away (4-1), the other to Aston Villa at home (4-0). Chelsea had lost their previous match against Arsenal. Newcastle are now in 4th place, with 27 points from 16 matches, while Chelsea sit in 8th, with 21 points from 16.

After an uneventful first half, The Magpies applied pressure in the second and were rewarded, when Joseph Willock gave them the lead in the 67th minute so at full time it was 1-0 to Newcastle.

Substitutions for Newcastle included Callum Wilson, Jacob Murphy and Matt Targett for Chris Wood, Joseph Willock and Botman Sven, respectively. Chelsea replaced Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Lewis Hall, Mason Mount and Armando Broja for Thiago Silva, Christian Pulisic, Marc Cucurella, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

There were bookings for Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Sean Longstaff from Newcastle. For Chelsea, Jorginho and Kalidou Koulibaly saw yellow.

Newcastle will play away against Leicester City, while Chelsea will face Bournemouth at home.
