Southampton 1-1 Arsenal: Gunners frustrated by stubborn Saints

Soton were helde ach other to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal on Sunday at St. Mary’s Stadium. Both Soton and Arsenal arrived fresh from some positive results. Soton were keen to hang onto their position at the top of the table and extend their winning run, following a 1-0 victory against Bournemouth while Arsenal came from back-to-back wins against Leeds United and Liverpool. Soton and Arsenal sit 15th and 1st places with 12 points and 28 points respectively.

Arsenal started strongly in the first half, when Granit Xhaka found the net, at 11 minutes to take them into the break 1-0 up.

Soton took the lead in the second half, when Stuart Armstrong found the net in the 65th minute, leaving the final score at 1-1.

Both managers used the full entitlement. Substitutions for Soton included Che Adams, Theo Walcott and Samuel Edozie for Joe Aribo, Adam Armstrong and Stuart Armstrong, respectively, Arsenal brought on Edward Nketiah, Kieran Tierney and Fabio Vieira, to replace Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White and Martin Odegaard.

There were bookings for Theo Walcott and Lyanco from Soton, and Bukayo Saka, for Arsenal.

Soton will play away against Crystal Palace, while Arsenal will face Nottingham Forest at home.
