Palace had secured a point against Brentford in their previous match. Newcastle and Palace currently occupy 10th and 15th spots in the table, with 7 points and 6 points respectively after 6 matches.

Substitutions for Newcastle included Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Dan Burn and Chris Wood for Miguel Almiron, Ryan Fraser, Matt Targett and Alexander Isak, respectively. Palace brought on Michael Olise, Odsonne Edouard and Nathaniel Clyne, to replace Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell.
