Newcastle 2 – Brighton 1: Mission accomplished for The Magpies at St James’ Park

Newcastle United snatched all three points from Brighton & Hove Albion in a 2-1 victory on Saturday, at St James’ Park. Newcastle were keen to hang onto their position at the top of league and extend their winning run after winning last match. Brighton were beaten 2-0 in the previous match against Aston Villa. Following today’s result, Newcastle are in 14th place, with 28 points from 28 matches, while Brighton sit in 13th, with 33 points from 28.

It was an impressive opening from Newcastle, with Ryan Fraser giving The Magpies the lead, 12 minutes in. Newcastle then netted once more and increased their advantage thanks to a goal from Fabian Schar, 14 minutes in to see out the first half 2-0.

Brighton started the second half with an intensified spirit, thanks to Lewis Dunk finding the net in the 55th minute and seeing the game end 2-1.

Both teams used all available substitutes. For Newcastle, Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff, came on for Jacob Murphy, Ryan Fraser and Joseph Willock, Brighton brought on Solly March, Neal Maupay and Alexis MacAllister to replace Tariq Lamptey, Jakub Moder and Steven Alzate.

There were bookings for Joelinton from Newcastle, and Shane Duffy, for Brighton.

Newcastle will next play Chelsea away, with Brighton facing Liverpool at home.
