Shrewsbury Town 3-2 Exeter: Shrews win five-goal thriller

Shrewsbury Town beat Exeter City with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday at Montgomery Waters Meadow. Both sides arrived in good form, having secured victories in their previous matches. Shrewsbury Town were looking to pick up points after winning last match whilst Exeter had been hopeful of extending their winning run, after a 1-0 victory against Milton Keynes Dons. Shrewsbury Town and Exeter currently occupy 8th and 9th spots in the table, with 12 points and 11 points respectively after 9 matches.

The Grecians started strongly in the first half, when Pierce Sweeney gave them the lead on the 17 minute mark. The momentum was again with Exeter, who then scored again courtesy of a goal from Jonathan Grounds, 20 minutes in to establish a 2-0 result. However, Shrewsbury Town refused to lie down and managed to pull back a goal from Matthew Pennington on the 21 minute mark. However they weren’t finished yet and Tom Bayliss made it 2-2, 34 minutes in, to take a 2-2 lead into half time.

Shrewsbury Town continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and were rewarded, when Cheyenne Dunkley found the net just before the full time, seing the match finish 3-2.

Substitutions for Shrewsbury Town included Ryan Bowman, Christian Saydee and Carl Winchester for Jordan Shipley, Robert Street and Tom Bayliss, respectively. Exeter brought on Jay Stansfield, Alex Hartridge, Matt Jay and Harry Smith, to replace Jack Sparkes, Rakeem Harper, Harry Kite and Jonathan Grounds.

The referee booked Jonathan Grounds for Exeter.

Shrewsbury Town will next travel to Port Vale, while Exeter will face Burton Albion at home.
