SWFC 4 – Portsmouth FC 1: Bad day for visitors at Hillsborough Stadium

Sheffield Wednesday earn hard-fought win over Portsmouth FC 4-1 on Saturday at Hillsborough Stadium. SWFC were looking forward to meeting again, following a previous defeat to Wycombe Wanderers. Portsmouth FC were able to continue their winning streak after a 3-1 win against Gillingham FC in their last match. This left, SWFC and Portsmouth FC sit 4th (85 points) and 10th (73 points) in the league respectively, after a total of 46 matches.
Portsmouth FC started the game well, with an early goal from George Hirst in the 4th minute. However, they were unable to maintain their lead, Lee Gregory managed to equalize and take the sides off, 17 minutes in at 1-1. The Owls looked to have the game under control when they scored again and increased their lead, thanks to a goal from Saido Berahino, 36 minutes in to establish a 2-1. SWFC then scored once more and increased their lead thanks to a goal from Jordan Storey just before half-time, which saw the first half end 3-1.
SWFC continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, with a goal from George Byers just before the final whistle. The final result, SWFC 4, Portsmouth FC 1.
For SWFC, Josh Windass, Callum Paterson and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, came on for Saido Berahino, Barry Bannan and Lee Gregory. Portsmouth FC brought on Aiden O’Brien and Jay Mingi, to replace Michael Jacobs and Louis Thompson.
There were bookings for Lee Gregory, Callum Paterson and George Byers from SWFC, and Joe Morrell, for Portsmouth FC.
