SWFC 5 – Burton Albion 2: Plenty of goals as The Owls get the home win

Sheffield Wednesday cruises against Burton Albion on a home win at Hillsborough Stadium on Tuesday. SWFC were looking to continue their run after winning their previous two games in the competition. The most recent was against the Charlton Athletic at home (2-0), the other to Doncaster Rovers away (3-1) whilst Burton Albion were beaten 2-0 in the previous match against Shrewsbury Town. After today’s result, SWFC and Burton Albion are 5th, (61 points) and 14th, (44 points), spots respectively, after 24 matches.
SWFC started the first half well, with Liam Palmer opening the rout at the 13 minute mark. The Owls looked to have the game under control when they scored again and incerased their lead, thanks to a goal from Barry Bannan, 28 minutes in to establish a 2-0. However, Burton Albion secured the points emphatically, with a goal from Adlene Guedioura in the 30th minute, which saw the first half end 2-1.
Burton Albion started the second half with renewed vigour, with a goal from Omar Niasse, 53 minutes in. However, each side looked hungry to win and The Owls then found the back of the net at the 67 minute mark thanks to Callum Paterson, taking the score to 3-2. SWFC looked to have the game under control when they scored again, thanks to a goal from Marvin Johnson, 75 minutes in to establish a 4-2. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a 2nd effort from Barry Bannan just before the final whistle with a final score of 5-2.
SWFC brought on Saido Berahino, Dominic Iorfa and Ciaran Brennan for Sylla Sow, Lewis Gibson and Massimo Luongo. Burton Albion brought on Jonny Smith, Christian Saydee and Charlie Lakin, to replace Gassan Ahadme, Omar Niasse and Adlene Guedioura.
There were bookings for Sam Hutchinson and Callum Paterson from SWFC. For Burton Albion, Omar Niasse and Adedeji Oshilaja saw yellow.
Next up, SWFC are away to Lincoln City, whilst Burton Albion will travel to face Oxford United.
