SWFC 2 – AFC Wimbledon 1: Visitors leave Hillsborough Stadium with nothing

AFC Wimbledon fell to an away defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium on Saturday. SWFC were looking to continue their run after winning last match. AFC Wimbledon were beaten 1-0 in the previous match against Cambridge Utd. As the table looks today, SWFC are in 5th place, with 72 points from 41 matches, while AFC Wimbledon sit in 22nd, with 33 points from 41.

It was an impressive opening from SWFC, with Jack Hunt finding the net at the 11 minute mark. However, their lead was short lived, as Ayoub Assal equalised for AFC Wimbledon in the 22nd minute to see out the first half 1-1.

The Owls continued to apply pressure in the second and were rewarded, thanks to Lee Gregory finding the net just before the final whistle. When the final wisthle blew, the result was 2-1 to SWFC.

Both coaches used all substitutions. For SWFC, Saido Berahino, Callum Paterson and Olamide Shodipo, came on for Dominic Iorfa, George Byers and Nathaniel Mendez Laing, AFC Wimbledon brought on Anthony Hartigan, Derick Osei Yaw and Dapo Mebude, to replace George Marsh, Zach Robinson and Ayoub Assal.

There were bookings for Lee Gregory and Harlee Dean from SWFC. For AFC Wimbledon, Daniel Csoka saw yellow.

SWFC will play away against Bolton Wanderers, while AFC Wimbledon will face Milton Keynes Dons at home.
