Derby 1-2 Port Vale: Valiants spring a surprise at Pride Park

Derby were defeated at home by Port Vale at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday. Derby were looking to continue their good run after winning their previous two games against Cambridge Utd away and Wycombe Wanderers at home, by 2-0 and 2-1 respectively while Port Vale were beaten 1-0 in their previous match against Sheffield Wednesday. Derby and Port Vale currently occupy 10th and 14th spots in the league, with 17 points and 15 points respectively after 13 matches.

Derby started strongly in the first half, with an early goal from James Collins in the 5th minute, ending the first half 1-0.

Port Vale started the second half with renewed vigour, when Ellis Harrison found the net on the 55 minute mark. However they weren’t finished yet and James Wilson made it 2-1 in the 66th minute to make it 2-1.

Both managers used all substitutions. Substitutions for Derby included William Osula, Haydon Roberts and Louie Sibley for Lewis Norman Dobbin, Richard Stearman and Max Bird, respectively, Port Vale brought on Dennis Politic, Connor Hall and Ademipo Odubeko, to replace Brad Walker, Liam McCarron and James Wilson.

The referee booked Richard Stearman from Derby and James Collins went off with a red card, while Port Vale’s Ellis Harrison, Dan Jones and Ben Garrity also received a yellow.

Derby will play away against Accrington Stanley, while Port Vale will face Forest Green Rovers at home.
