Union Berlin 0 – Saint-Gilloise 1: Belgian get narrow win away at the An der Alten Försterei Stadium

Union Saint-Gilloise started on the right in the new Europa League Group Stage campaign with victory against Union Berlin. Today’s result, Union Berlin are now in 3rd place, with 0 points from 1 match, while Saint-Gilloise sit in 2nd, with 3 points from 1.

Saint-Gilloise started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, when Senne Lynen gave them the lead in the 39th minute, to take a 1-0 lead into half time. Both teams struggled to produce anything in the second half and the match ended 1-0.

Substitutions for Union Berlin included Andras Schafer, Sven Michel, Julian Ryerson, Tim Skarke and Jamie Leweling for Genki Haraguchi, Kevin Behrens, Christopher Trimmel, Janik Haberer and Danilho Doekhi, respectively. Saint-Gilloise brought on Cameron Puertas Castro, Simon Adingra and Dennis Eckert Ayensa, to replace Jose Rodriguez, Dante Vanzeir and Victor Boniface.

The referee booked Christopher Trimmel and Andras Schafer from Union Berlin and Sven Michel went off with a red card, while Saint-Gilloise’s Loic Lapoussin also received a yellow.

In the second round of action in the Europa League Group Stage Union Berlin will play against Sporting Braga away and Saint-Gilloise will play against Malmö at home.
