Girona 3-5 Real Sociedad: The White and Blues take stunning road win

Girona on home loss to Real Sociedad at Estadi Montilivi on Sunday. Girona were looking to get back to winning ways after losing their last match 2-1 to Real Betis. Real were coming off the back of a 2-1 win against Espanyol. Girona and Real currently occupy 13th and 6th spots in the table, with 7 points and 13 points respectively after 7 matches.

The White and Blues started strongly in the first half, when Alexander Sorloth gave them the lead in the 8th minute. However, the good form didn’t last for long, as an equalizer from Rodrigo Riquelme, 23 minutes in, brought Girona level. Girona looked to have the match under control when they scored again and increased their lead, thanks to a goal from Martinez Arnau in the 27th minute to establish a 2-1. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Alexander Sorloth equalised for Real just before half-time, concluding the first half 2-2.

Girona started strong in the second half and were able to dominate, with an early goal from Valentin Castellanos in the 48th minute. However, their lead was short-lived, as an equalizer from Brais Mendez, 66 minutes in, brought Real level. Real looked to have the match under control when they scored again to grab the advantage, thanks to a goal from Martin Zubimendi after 71 minutes to establish a 4-3. However they weren’t finished yet and Take made it 5-3 just before the full time to give a final score of 5-3.

Substitutions for Girona included Yangel Herrera, Valery Fernandez, Oscar Urena Garci and Yan Couto for Manu Vallejo, Juanpe, Aleix Garcia and Martinez Arnau, respectively. Real brought on Alex Sola, Benat Turrientes, Ander Guevara, Robert Navarro and Carlos Fernandez, to replace Andoni Gorosabel, David Silva, Aritz Elustondo, Take and Alexander Sorloth.

There were bookings for Oriol Romeu, Miguel Gutierrez and Valentin Castellanos from Girona, and Mikel Merino, for Real.

Girona will next play Atletico Madrid away, with Real facing Villarreal at home.
