Celta 4 – Mallorca 3: The Sky Blues beat The Vermilions at the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos

Celta Vigo beat Mallorca with a thumping 4-3 victory on Sunday at the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos. With each team arriving on the back of a league defeat, they were both keen to pick up points. Celta were looking to get back their winning ways, following a previous defeat to Atletico Madrid. Mallorca lost 1-0 in the last match they played against Valencia. Following today’s result, Celta and Mallorca sit 10th, (35 points) and 16th, (26 points), in the table respectively, after 27 matches.

Celta started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, thanks to a goal from Thiago Galhardo, 13 minutes in. However, they were unable to maintain their lead, Giovanni Gonzalez managed to equalize and take the sides off, 17 minutes in at 1-1. The Sky Blues in turn, then responded, 25 minutes in increasing their lead with an effort from Denis Suarez, to take a 2-1 lead into half time.

Mallorca started the second half with renewed vigour, with an early calamitous own goal from Joseph Aidoo in the 49th minute. However, each side looked hungry to win and Celta then found the back of the net in the 61st minute thanks to Iago Aspas, taking the score to 3-2. However, their lead was short-lived, as an equalizer from Salva Sevilla at the 87 minute mark, brought The Vermilions level. The Sky Blues in turn, then responded just before the final whistle increasing their lead with a second effort from Iago Aspas and seeing the game end 4-3.

For Celta, Renato Tapia, Santi Mina and Augusto Solari, came on for Fran Beltran, Thiago Galhardo and Franco Cervi. Mallorca brought on Salva Sevilla, Angel Rodriguez, Kang In Lee, Fernando Nino and Rodrigo Battaglia for Iddrisu Baba, Giovanni Gonzalez, Take, Dani Rodriguez and Antonio Sanchez.

The referee booked from Celta Fran Beltran, Renato Tapia, Hugo Mallo and Brais Mendez and from Mallorca Vedat Muriqi, Raillo, Rodrigo Battaglia and Angel Rodriguez. Both teams also had a sending off, with Hugo Mallo (2 yellow cards) for Celta and Manolo Reina for Mallorca.

Celta will play their next fixture away against Villarreal, while Mallorca will face R Madrid at home.
