RB Leipzig 1-4 Shakhtar: Impressive visitors hammer the Red Bulls

RB Leipzig open Champions League campaign with a defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk. Today’s result, Leipzig are now in 3rd place on the table and have 0 points while Shakhtar sit in 1st with 3 points after 1 match.

Shakhtar started strongly in the first half, when Maryan Shved opened the rout, at 16 minutes, to take a 1-0 lead into half time.

Leipzig took the initiative in the second half, with a goal from Mohamed Simakan on the 57 minute mark. However, each side looked hungry to win and Shakhtar then found the back of the net in the 58th minute thanks to Maryan Shved, taking the score to 2-1. The momentum was again with Shakhtar, who then scored again courtesy of a goal from Mykhailo Mudryk, 76 minutes in to establish a 3-1 result. They then scored again, pulling level thanks to a goal from Lassina Franck Traore just before the full time to make it 4-1.

Substitutions for Leipzig included David Raum, Benjamin Henrichs, Emil Forsberg and Amadou Haidara for Marcel Halstenberg, Xaver Schlager, Timo Werner and Konrad Laimer, respectively. Shakhtar brought on Ivan Petryak, Neven Djurasek, Lassina Franck Traore and Sergey Krivtsov, to replace Maryan Shved, Artem Bondarenko, Oleksandr Zubkov and Taras Stepanenko.

There were bookings for Mohamed Simakan from Leipzig. For Shakhtar, Yukhym Konoplia, Mykhailo Mudryk, Anatolii Trubin and Neven Djurasek saw yellow.

In the second round of action in the Champions League Leipzig will travel to play R Madrid and Shakhtar will play Celtic at home.
