Werder Bremen 0-1 Augsburg: Visitors defy underdog odds to pick up road win

Augsburg’s 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday, was hard fought at the Wohninvest Weserstadion. Werder had been hopeful of continuing their good run after winning last match while Augsburg were beaten 2-0 in their previous match against Hertha. Werder and Augsburg currently occupy 8th and 16th spots in the league, with 8 points and 3 points respectively after 6 matches.

After an uneventful first half, Augsburg continued to pile on the pressure in the second period and were rewarded, thanks to a goal from Ermedin Demirovic, 63 minutes in, leaving the final score at 1-0.

Substitutions for Werder included Michael Zetterer, Niklas Schmidt, Ilia Gruev, Oliver Burke and Lee Buchanan for Jiri Pavlenka, Jens Stage, Christian Gross, Romano Schmid and Anthony Jung, respectively. Augsburg brought on Fredrik Jensen, Arne Maier and Daniel Caligiuri, to replace Ermedin Demirovic, Florian Niederlechner and Mergim Berisha.

There were bookings for Christian Gross, Niclas Fullkrug, Niklas Schmidt and Amos Pieper from Werder. For Augsburg, Elvis Rexhbecaj, Maximilian Bauer, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Carlos Gruezo and Rafal Gikiewicz saw yellow.

Werder will next travel to Bayer Leverkusen, while Augsburg will face Bayern Munich at home.
