Union Berlin 3 – Mainz 1: Points secure for The Iron Ones at the An der Alten Försterei Stadium

Mainz on away loss to Union Berlin at the An der Alten Försterei Stadium on Saturday. Union Berlin were looking to get back their winning ways after losing their last game 1-0 to Arminia Bielefeld while Mainz were looking to extend their winning run after a 3-2 victory against Bayer Leverkusen. As it stands, Union Berlin and Mainz currently occupy 7th and 9th spots in the table, with 37 points and 34 points respectively after 24 matches.
The Iron Ones started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, thanks to Genki Haraguchi giving Union Berlin the lead after only 7 minutes. The score at half time was 1-0.
Union Berlin continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, with a goal from Sheraldo Becker at the 56 minute mark. The momentum was now with The Iron Ones, who then scored again through a goal from Taiwo Awoniyi, 75 minutes in to establish a 3-0. In the end though, The 05ers hit back though just before the final whistle, with a goal from Delano Burgzorg and seeing the game end 3-1.
For Union Berlin, Taiwo Awoniyi, Sven Michel, Kevin Mohwald, Levin Oztunali and Bastian Oczipka, came on for Andreas Voglsammer, Sheraldo Becker, Genki Haraguchi, Grischa Promel and Niko Giesselmann. Mainz brought on Marcus Ingvartsen, Kevin Stoger, Niklas Tauer, Jean-Paul Boetius and Delano Burgzorg for Karim Onisiwo, Alexander Hack, Stefan Bell, Lee Jae Sung and Jonathan Michael Burkardt.
The referee booked Christopher Trimmel, Paul Jaeckel, Timo Baumgartl and Rani Khedira from Union Berlin. Mainz had the worst of it though, with Alexander Hack and Dominik Kohr seeing yellow, and Dominik Kohr (2 yellow cards) then sent off with a red.
