Schalke 1-6 Union Berlin: The Iron Ones deliver emphatic win at the Veltins-Arena

Schalke suffered a home defeat to Union Berlin on Saturday at the Veltins-Arena. Schalke wanted to continue adding points following a disappointing 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg in their previous game. Union Berlin, on the other hand, were coming off the back of a 2-1 win against RB Leipzig. As the table looks today, Schalke are in 16th place in the table and have 2 points while Union Berlin sit in 1st with 10 points after 4 matches.

The Iron Ones didn’t take long to get on the score-sheet, when Morten Thorsby opened the rout early in the first half. However, they were unable to maintain their lead, Marius Bulter managed to equalize and take the sides off in the 31st minute at 1-1. However, each side looked hungry to win and Union Berlin then found the back of the net, 36 minutes in thanks to Sheraldo Becker, taking the score to 2-1. The momentum was now with Union Berlin, who then scored again through a goal from Janik Haberer, at 45 minutes to establish a 3-1. However they weren’t finished yet and Sheraldo Becker made it 4-1 just before halftime to see out the first half 4-1.

Union Berlin continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, thanks to a goal from Sven Michel in the 87th minute. The Iron Ones then scored once more and increased their advantage thanks to a second effort from Sven Michel just before the final whistle with a final score of 6-1.

Substitutions for Schalke included Florian Flick, Jordan Larsson, Danny Latza, Sebastian Polter and Florent Mollet for Alex Kral, Dominick Drexler, Tom Krauss, Simon Terodde and Rodrigo Zalazar Martinez, repectively. Union Berlin brought on Kevin Behrens, Sven Michel, Milos Pantovic, Levin Oztunali and Paul Jaeckel, to replace Jordan Siebatcheu, Sheraldo Becker, Morten Thorsby, Janik Haberer and Danilho Doekhi.

The referee booked Malick Thiaw for Schalke.

Schalke will next travel to Stuttgart, while Union Berlin will face Bayern Munich at home.
