Schalke 1-0 Mainz: The Royal Blues scrap out hard-fought victory

Schalke banked all three points against the Mainz in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday, at the Veltins-Arena. Both Schalke and Mainz came from defeats in their previous league games. Schalke were looking to get back to winning ways after losing 2-1 to Werder Bremen in their last match, while Mainz lost 3-0 in their against Wolfsburg. Schalke and Mainz currently occupy 18th and 11th spots in the table, with 9 points and 18 points respectively after 14 matches.

The first half of the match started well for The Royal Blues, when Simon Terodde found the net, at 10 minutes, ending the first half 1-0. The second part ended with little further action at either end and goalless.

Substitutions for Schalke included Dominick Drexler, Danny Latza, Sebastian Polter and Mehmet-Can Aydin for Florent Mollet, Kenan Karaman, Simon Terodde and Cedric Brunner, respectively. Mainz brought on Stefan Bell, Jonathan Michael Burkardt, Angelo Fulgini, Silvan Widmer and Leandro Martins, to replace Alexander Hack, Lee Jae Sung, Aaron Martin, Danny Da Costa and Marcus Ingvartsen.

There were bookings for Florent Mollet, Maya Yoshida and Kenan Karaman from Schalke, and Edimilson Fernandes, for Mainz.

Mainz and Schalke will next play at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich respectively.
