On Saturday, Werder Bremen suffered an away defeat to SC Freiburg at Europa-Park-Stadion. Both Freiburg and Werder came from defeats in their previous league games. Freiburg arrived at the match looking to pick up more points after losing 5-0 to Bayern Munich in their previous fixture. Werder were beaten 2-0 in their previous match against Mainz. Freiburg are now in 3rd place on the table and have 21 points while Werder sit in 11th with 15 points after 11 matches.

Following a goalless first half, Freiburg applied pressure in the second and were rewarded, when Lukas Kubler gave them the lead, 56 minutes in. However they weren’t finished yet and Vincenzo Grifo made it 2-0 in the 80th minute to make it 2-0.

Substitutions for Freiburg included Ritsu Doan, Lucas Holer, Keven Schlotterbeck, Maximilian Eggestein and Nils Petersen for Yannik Keitel, Vincenzo Grifo, Philipp Lienhart, Nicolas Hofler and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, respectively. Werder brought on Felix Agu, Oliver Burke, Eren Dinkci and Fabio Chiarodia, to replace Mitchell Weiser, Romano Schmid, Jens Stage and Lee Buchanan.

The referee booked Nicolas Hofler and Maximilian Eggestein from Freiburg. Werder had the worst of it though, with Niclas Fullkrug and Felix Agu seeing yellow, and Marco Friedl then sent off with a red.

Freiburg will next play Schalke away, with Werder facing Hertha at home.
