Mainz 3 – Bayern 1: Visitors to the OPEL Arena leave with nothing

Bayern Munich fell to an away defeat at the hands of Mainz at the OPEL Arena on Saturday. Mainz were hoping to get something from this game, following a previous defeat to Wolfsburg. Bayern were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against Borussia Dortmund and Arminia Bielefeld. After today’s result, Mainz and Bayern currently occupy 9th and 1st spots in the table, with 42 points and 75 points respectively after 32 matches.

Mainz started the first half well, thanks to Jonathan Michael Burkardt finding the net, 18 minutes in. The momentum was now with The 05ers, who then scored again through a goal from Moussa Niakhate at the 27 minute mark to establish a 2-0. However, Bayern hit back though, 33 minutes in, with a goal from Robert Lewandowski. The score at half time was 2-1.

Mainz continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, with Leandro Martins finding the net, 57 minutes in, leaving the final score at 3-1.

For Mainz, Jean-Paul Boetius, Daniel Brosinski, Marcus Ingvartsen, Matondo-Merveille Papela and Kevin Stoger, came on for Jonathan Michael Burkardt, Anton Stach, Karim Onisiwo, Dominik Kohr and Leandro Martins. Bayern brought on Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Vidovic, Nianzou Tanguy Kouassi and Josip Stanisic, to replace Marcel Sabitzer, Leon Goretzka, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule.

The referee booked four players from Bayern, Joshua Kimmich, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard and Leroy Sane.

Mainz will next travel to Hertha, while Bayern will face Stuttgart at home.
