Cologne 3 – Mainz 2: The Billy Goats beat The 05ers at the Rhein Energie Stadion

Cologne enjoyed a mesmerising home victory against Mainz at the Rhein Energie Stadion on Saturday. Cologne were hoping to get something from this game after losing their last game 1-0 to Union Berlin. Mainz secured a point against B Mönchengladbach in their previous match. Following today’s result, Cologne and Mainz sit 7th, (43 points) and 10th, (38 points), in the league respectively, after 29 matches.

The 05ers dominated the first half, thanks to Jonathan Michael Burkardt giving Mainz the lead in the 14th minute. The score at half time was 0-1.

Mainz started the second half with an intensified spirit, with Karim Onisiwo finding the net at the 55 minute mark. However, The Billy Goats weren’t lying down and managed to pull back a goal from Ellyes Skhiri in the 60th minute. The momentum was now with Cologne, who then scored again through a goal from Dejan Ljubicic at the 78 minute mark to establish a 2-2. However they weren’t finished yet and Luca Kilian made it 3-2 at the 82 minute mark with a final score of 3-2.

For Cologne, Salih Ozcan, Louis Schaub, Dejan Ljubicic and Tim Lemperle, came on for Jannes Horn, Ondrej Duda, Florian Kainz and Mark Uth. Mainz brought on David Nemeth, Lee Jae Sung, Daniel Brosinski, Kevin Stoger and Marcus Ingvartsen, to replace Alexander Hack, Jean-Paul Boetius, Silvan Widmer, Dominik Kohr and Jonathan Michael Burkardt.

There were bookings for Julian Chabot and Anthony Modeste from Cologne. For Mainz, Aaron Martin and Anton Stach saw yellow.

Cologne will next travel to B Mönchengladbach, while Mainz will face Stuttgart at home.
