Bochum 1-2 Mainz: Onisiwo lifts Mainz past Bochem at Vonovia Ruhrstadion

Bochum suffer a first loss against Mainz in their first match of the new Bundesliga season. Today’s result, leave both teams on 0 points and occupying 10th and 13th positions respectively, after their first match.

Mainz started strongly in the first half, when Karim Onisiwo gave The 05ers the lead, 26 minutes in. However, their lead was short lived, as Kevin Stoger equalised for Bochum in the 39th minute and saw the first half out 1-1.

Mainz continued to pile on the pressure in the second, when Karim Onisiwo found the net again, 77 minutes in, leaving the final score at 2-1.

Substitutions for Bochum included Jordi Osei-Tutu, Silvere Ganvoula, Philipp Forster and Saidy Janko for Simon Zoller, Philipp Hofmann, Gerrit Holtmann and Cristian Gamboa, repectively. Mainz brought on Leandro Martins, Delano Burgzorg, Marlon Mustapha and Anthony Caci, to replace Lee Jae Sung, Angelo Fulgini, Karim Onisiwo and Edimilson Fernandes.

There were bookings for Kostas Stafylidis and Silvere Ganvoula from Bochum. For Mainz, Anton Stach, Stefan Bell and Delano Burgzorg saw yellow.

In the second round of action in the Bundesliga Bochum will travel to play Hoffenheim and Mainz will play Union Berlin at home.
