Fluminense 1-1 Palmeiras: League leaders earn a point at the Maracana

On Sunday, Fluminense and Palmeiras were held to a 1-1 draw at Maracana. Fluminense were keen to hang onto their position at the top of league and extend their winning run, following a 5-2 victory against Coritiba. Palmeiras, on the other hand, had managed to pick up a single point in their matchup with Flamengo. After today’s result, Fluminense and Palmeiras currently occupy 2nd and 1st spots in the league, with 41 points and 49 points respectively after 24 matches.

Palmeiras started strongly in the first half, when Rony gave Palmeiras the lead, 8 minutes in. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Manoel equalised for Fluminense at the 38 minute mark, ending the first half 1-1. With both teams struggling to produce anything meaningful in the second half though, the match ended 1-1.

Substitutions for Fluminense included Nathan, Willian, Matheus Martinelli and Caio Paulista for Matheus Martins, German Cano, Nino and Cristiano, repectively. Palmeiras brought on Mayke, Wesley, Jose Manuel Lopez, Bruno Tabata and Gabriel Menino for Marcos Rocha, Raphael Veiga, Rony, Dudu and Ze Rafael.

There were bookings for Nino, Ganso and Michel Araujo from Fluminense. For Palmeiras, Raphael Veiga and Murilo Cerqueira saw yellow.

Palmeiras and Fluminense will next play away to Red Bull Bragantino and Athletico Paranaense respectively.
