Fluminense 5-2 Coritiba: Tricolor put on a five-star show at the Maracana

Fluminense’s 5-2 win over Coritiba on Sunday, was hard fought at Maracana. With each team arriving on the back of a league defeat, they were both keen to pick up points. Fluminense arrived at the match looking pick up points after losing their last match 3-0 to Internacional. Coritiba, on the other hand, were beaten 1-0 in the previous match against Atl. Mineiro. As it stands, Fluminense and Coritiba currently occupy 2nd and 18th spots in the league, with 41 points and 22 points respectively after 23 matches.

It was an impressive opening from Fluminense, with an early goal from Caio Paulista in the 3rd minute. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a goal from Jhon Arias at the 36 minute mark to see out the first half 2-0.

Coritiba took the initiative in the second half, thanks to a goal from Alef Manga, 72 minutes in. However, Fluminense increased their lead 3-1 thanks to a goal from Nathan at the 77 minute mark. However, Coritiba weren’t lying down and managed to pull back a goal from Egidio in the 84th minute. However, Fluminense increased their advantage 4-2 thanks to a goal from Willian, 90 minutes in. Fluminense then netted again and increased their advantage thanks to a 2nd effort from Willian just before the final whistle with a final score of 5-2.

Substitutions for Fluminense included Marrony, Matheus Martinelli, Willian, Felipe Melo and Michel Araujo for Jhon Arias, Nonato, German Cano, Nathan and Matheus Martins, repectively. Coritiba brought on Natanael, Alef Manga, Bruno Gomes, Regis and Robinho, to replace Matheus Alexandre, Leo Gamalho, Val, Guilherme Biro and Bernardo Marcos Lemes.

There were bookings for Willian from Fluminense, and Val and Natanael, for Coritiba.

Fluminense next face Palmeiras and Coritiba are at home to Avai.
