Botafogo on Tuesday lost to Palmeiras on a home defeat at Nilton Santos. Both sides arrived on the back of wins. Botafogo were keen to hang onto their position at the top of the table and extend their winning run after winning their previous two games against Goiás EC away and Coritiba at home, by 1-0 and 2-0 respectively whilst Palmeiras were coming from consecutive wins against Atl. Mineiro and Santos FC. Botafogo are now in 10th place on the table and have 37 points while Palmeiras sit in 1st with 63 points after 29 matches.

Botafogo started strongly in the first half, when Soares gave them the lead, at 20 minutes. However, the good fortune didn’t last for long. An equalizer from Gustavo Scarpa, 26 minutes in brought Palmeiras level. They then scored again, pulling level thanks to a goal from Mayke in the 36th minute, to take a 2-1 lead into half time.

Palmeiras continued to apply pressure in the second period and were rewarded, with a goal from Dudu on the 60 minute mark, leaving the final score at 3-1.

Substitutions for Botafogo included Rafael, Gustavo Sauer, Joao Victor, Matheus Nascimento and Romildo for Renzo Saravia, Junior Santos, Gabriel Appelt, Kanu and Tche Tche, respectively. Palmeiras brought on Gabriel Menino, Eduard Atuesta, Rafael Navarro, Benjamin Kuscevic and Vanderlan, to replace Dudu, Gustavo Scarpa, Rony, Mayke and Joaquin Piquerez.

The referee booked Kanu, Tche Tche, Hugo, Carlos Eduardo and Romildo from Botafogo. Palmeiras had the worst of it though, with Gustavo Gomez and Ze Rafael seeing yellow, and Ze Rafael (2 yellow cards) then sent off with a red.
