Supporters’ groups exist far and wide, cheering on the Anfield outfit whether in the Roy Hodgson doldrums or celebrating another Champions League win.
The history of Liverpool kits has some belters and some shockers like every club. Their success over the decades, though, has helped elevate the reputation of many kits.
After all, a beautiful football kit takes on another meaning if it is associated with on-field achievements. It’s hard to look back fondly on a kit that was worn during a disappointing campaign.

Best Liverpool Home Kits
There are three obvious standouts with the best Liverpool kits:
The Candy-sponsored number from 1989-91 is perhaps the club’s most iconic kits. The Reebok jersey worn in the 2005 Champions League final has prestige beyond most others, and the 1993-95 home kit has become a classic.
The Candy kit from 1989-91 has history on its side, having been the last time Liverpool won the league for 30 years.
It was ahead of its time with an eye-catching background pattern that most kit manufacturers shied away from. The 1990s were a golden age for football kits, and this is symbolic of that.
It’s a particularly aesthetically pleasing version of the club badge, too. Remakes of this kit are very popular into the 2020s, which speaks volumes for how it has stood the test of time.
It’ll set you back a lot of pennies to pick up an original version, though perhaps that isn’t surprising for a kit that’s over three decades old.
The Reebok kit wasn’t as outlandish, nor is the design as universally admired. The white patches under the armpits are a nice touch, though.
This one is really about what it meant – it is synonymous with iconic moments in the club’s history and some of Steven Gerrard’s greatest heroics.
From the group stage goal against Olympiakos to Gerrard firing up his teammates in Istanbul and scoring an FA Cup final screamer, this kit evokes special memories.
We just couldn’t leave out the mid-90s home kit. The white stripes on either side and the badge in the middle is a really clean look.
It isn’t associated with a period of success like the two prior, but this should be included in any collection of the best Liverpool kits.
Best Liverpool Away Shirts
The Liverpool away kit in 21/22 has been met with mixed reviews. It’s a tall order to become one of the best Liverpool away kits, and perhaps the legacy of this jersey over the final weeks of the season will determine how it is remembered.
The 1995-96 away kit, though, has aged well despite Liverpool not enjoying team glory in that season. A white and deep green quadrant design was something a bit different from Adidas, and the look is only enhanced by the famous Carlsberg sponsor.
Just like the colour scheme, they went a bit different with the collar, which only adds to the jersey. It’s right up there among the best Liverpool kits of all-time.
Again delving into the brash 90s, Liverpool’s bright yellow away kit from 1997-98 is a real gem.
This isn’t traditionally thought to be among the best Liverpool kits, but it’s in the mix for us. Following the garish white suits at the FA Cup final, this was in-keeping with the Spice Boys team of the time.
The red and black around the collar and sleeves completes what is a simple yet effective design. The biggest criticism is how easy it would be to mistake this for a Watford shirt.
Journeying back to the mid-1980s, it’s only right that we give a nod to the 1985-86 away jersey from Adidas. There’s no flashiness about this off-white kit, but the colour with subtle red and gold trim is a perfect mix.
Of course, it has the added bonus of being worn by an all-conquering Liverpool team under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish. Perhaps the Liverpool away kit 21/22 will be remembered as fondly in a couple of decades’ time.
We’ve already mentioned the Candy-era home shirt. In 1988-89, Liverpool might have lost out on the title, but their grey away kit was arguably their greatest in the club’s history.
The sleeves sported red and grey stripes. The rest was the now-iconic grey pattern that has been seen on every website selling vintage football shirts.
Some of Liverpool’s recent away kits have been met with plenty of admiration, yet maybe it takes time to be held in the same esteem as some of these classics.
What the club are achieving under Klopp can definitely help elevate some of the recent Liverpool kits into classic status. Perhaps the remainder of the 2021-22 season will see some new Liverpool shirts entire the pantheon of the best kits in club history.
