Sampdoria 4-1 Fiorentina: Viola drop crucial top-six points in heavy defeat

Sampdoria beat Fiorentina with a thumping 4-1 victory on Monday at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Sampdoria were looking forward to meeting again, following a previous defeat to Lazio. Fiorentina had been hopeful of extending their winning run, after a 2-0 victory against Roma. Following today’s result, Sampdoria and Fiorentina sit 15th, (36 points) and 7th, (59 points), in the table respectively, after 37 matches.

Sampdoria started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, with Alex Ferrari opening the rout, at 16 minutes. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a goal from Fabio Quagliarella at the 30 minute mark to see out the first half 2-0.

The Blue-circled continued to apply pressure in the second and were rewarded, with a goal from Morten Thorsby, at 71 minutes. Sampdoria looked to have the game under control when they scored again and increased their lead, thanks to a goal from Abdelhamid Sabiri after 83 minutes to establish a 4-0. In the end though, The Purple One secured the points emphatically, with a penalty goal from Nicolas Gonzalez just before the final whistle and seeing the game end 4-1.

For Sampdoria, Francesco Caputo, Mikkel Damsgaard, Simone Trimboli and Nicola Ravaglia, came on for Fabio Quagliarella, Antonio Candreva, Ronaldo Vieira and Emil Audero. Fiorentina brought on Youssef Maleh, Krzysztof Piatek, Jose Callejon, Riccardo Saponara and Aleksa Terzic, to replace Alfred Duncan, Arthur Cabral, Jonathan Ikone, Lucas Torreira and Lorenzo Venuti.

The referee booked six players. Ronaldo Vieira and Simone Trimboli from Sampdoria, who saw yellow cards and Omar Colley, sent off with a red, as well as for Fiorentina Lucas Torreira, Nicolas Gonzalez and Youssef Maleh also seeing yellows.

Sampdoria will play away against Internazionale, while Fiorentina will face Juventus at home.
