Liverpool 3-1 Southampon: Nunez double helps sink slumping Saints

Liverpool eased past Southampton in a 3-1 victory on Saturday at Anfield. Liverpool were looking to continue their good run, following a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur. Soton were beaten 4-1 in their previous match against Newcastle United. Liverpool are now in 6th place, with 22 points from 16 matches, while Soton sit in 19th, with 12 points from 16.

The Reds started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, when Roberto Firmino gave them the lead after only 6 minutes. However, the good fortune didn’t last for long. An equalizer from Che Adams, 9 minutes in brought Soton level. However, each side looked hungry to win and Liverpool then found the back of the net, 21 minutes in thanks to Darwin Nunez, taking the score to 2-1. However they weren’t finished yet and Darwin Nunez made it 3-1 just before half-time. The first half ended 3-1. The second part ended with little further action at either end and goalless.

Substitutions for Liverpool included James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kostas Tsimikas, Fabio Carvalho and Nathaniel Phillips for Harvey Elliott, Roberto Firmino, Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, respectively. Soton brought on Theo Walcott, Samuel Edozie, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Lyanco and Joe Aribo, to replace Stuart Armstrong, Adam Armstrong, Duje Caleta-Car, Armel Bella-Kotchap and Romeo Lavia.

The referee booked Duje Caleta-Car and Mohammed Salisu for Soton.

Liverpool will next travel to Aston Villa, while Soton will face Brighton & Hove Albion at home.
