Stoke 3-1 Sheffield Utd: Leaders toppled as Potters come up big
Stoke City banked all three points against the Sheffield United in a 3-1 victory on Saturday, at Bet365 Stadium. Stoke were aiming to improve their league standing after a 1-1 draw against Burnley. Sheffield U had lost their previous match against Queens Park Rangers. Stoke and Sheffield U currently occupy 15th and 1st spots in the table, with 16 points and 24 points respectively after 14 matches.
The Potters started strongly in the first half, with an early goal from Ben Wilmot in the 4th minute. However, their lead was short-lived, as an equalizer from Rhian Brewster, 28 minutes in, brought Sheffield U level. Stoke in turn, then responded just before half-time, grabbing the lead with an effort from Phil Jagielka and saw the first half out 2-1.
Stoke once more applied the pressure in the second half and were rewarded, with a goal from Liam Delap just before the full time, seing the match finish 3-1.
Substitutions for Stoke included Liam Delap, Harry Clarke, Sam Clucas and Jordan Thompson for Dwight Gayle, Dujon Sterling, William Smallbone and Lewis Baker, respectively. Sheffield U brought on Billy Sharp, Ollie Arblaster, Sai Sachdev, Ben Osborn and Daniel Jebbison, to replace Reda Khadra, James John McAtee, Kyron Gordon, Thomas Doyle and Rhian Brewster.
There were bookings for Tarique Fosu, Ben Wilmot and Tyrese Campbell from Stoke. For Sheffield U, John Egan and Rhys Norrington-Davies saw yellow.
Stoke will next travel to Preston North End, while Sheffield U will face Blackpool at home.
