This Wednesday saw RMA secure an important 3-1 away win against Chelsea, in the opening leg of this Champions League tie. In the previous phase of the competition, Chelsea won against Lille; RMA, for their part, managed to beat Paris Saint-Germain. This was a huge result for RMA, who will be confident when they play the return leg at home. The Pensioners now face a considerable challenge for qualification to the next stage of the tournament.

It was an impressive opening from RMA, thanks to Karim Benzema giving Los Blancos the lead in the 21st minute. RMA looked to have the game under control when they scored again and increased their lead, thanks to a effort from Karim Benzema at the 24 minute mark to establish a 2-0. However, Chelsea weren’t lying down and managed to pull back a goal from Kai Havertz, 40 minutes in. However, RMA just before half-time increased their advantage following another Karim Benzema goal, to take a 1-3 lead into half time. Both teams unable to deliver anything further, the score remained at 3-1 at full time.

For Chelsea, Mateo Kovacic, Hakim Ziyech, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Romelu Lukaku, came on for Andreas Christensen, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Christian Pulisic. RMA replaced Nacho, Eduardo Camavinga, Gareth Bale and Dani Ceballos with Eder Militao, Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde.

There were bookings for Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea, and Eder Militao, for RMA.

This will be a very well received result for, on the back of a dismal draw in the first leg. It sets the stage for them well as they now move forward to the next stage of the Champions League.
