Benfica won 1-0 against to Ajax in the return meeting held this Tuesday at the Johan Cruyff Arena and have qualified for the quarterfinals. The first leg match held at Estadio Do Sport Lisboa E Benfica, had ended with a disappointing 2-2 draw. With this result, Benfica manage to secure their place in the Champions League for at least one more round, as they await their new rivals.

After a goalless first half, Benfica continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, thanks to a goal from Darwin Nunez at the 77 minute mark and seeing the game end 1-0.

For Ajax, Davy Klaassen, Brian Brobbey and Mohammed Kudus, came on for Steven Berghuis, Edson Alvarez and Jurrien Timber. Benfica brought on Soualiho Meite, Roman Yaremchuk, Diogo Goncalves, Paulo Bernardo and Valentino Lazaro, to replace Adel Taarabt, Everton, Darwin Nunez, Goncalo Ramos and Gilberto.

There were bookings for Jurrien Timber, Daley Blind and Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax, and Goncalo Ramos, for Benfica.

This will be a very well received result for Benfica, on the back of a dismal draw in the first leg. It sets the stage for them well as they now move forward to the next stage of the Champions League.
