Leipzig were held to 2-2 draw by Cologne down on Saturday at Red Bull Arena. Leipzig wanted to improve their league standing after a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart. Cologne, on the other hand, were able to continue their winning streak after a 3-1 win against Schalke in their last match. As the table looks today, Leipzig and Cologne sit 9th, (2 points) and 2nd, (4 points), spots respectively, after 2 matches.

The Red Bulls started the match well, when Timo Werner gave Leipzig the lead, 36 minutes in. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Florian Dietz equalised for The Billy Goats just before halftime to see out the first half 1-1.

Leipzig fought back the second half, when Christopher Nkunku gave Leipzig the lead, at 56 minutes. In the end though, their lead was short lived, as Josko Gvardiol equalised for Cologne, 72 minutes in and saw the match end 2-2.

Substitutions for Leipzig included Josko Gvardiol, Kevin Kampl, Andre Silva and Amadou Haidara for Marcel Halstenberg, Hugo Novoa, Timo Werner and Dani Olmo, repectively. Cologne brought on Benno Erik Schmitz, Linton Maina, Ondrej Duda, Tim Lemperle and Sargis Adamyan, to replace Kingsley Ehizibue, Jan Thielmann, Eric Martel, Dejan Ljubicic and Florian Dietz.

The referee booked Benjamin Henrichs from Leipzig and Dominik Szoboszlai went off with a red card, while Cologne’s Jan Thielmann, Timo Hubers, Sargis Adamyan and Florian Kainz also received a yellow.

Next up, Leipzig are away to Union Berlin, whilst Cologne will travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt.
