Palmeiras 4-2 Goianense: Hosts Palmeiras win high-scoring thriller

Atlético Goianense on away loss to Palmeiras at Allianz Parque on Friday. Both Palmeiras and Goianense arrived at the challenge after previous wins. Palmeiras were keen to hang onto their position at the top of league and extend their winning run after winning their previous two games in the league. The most recent was against the Coritiba away (2-0), the other to Botafogo at home (4-0). Goianense were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against Fluminense and Avaí. After today’s result, Palmeiras and Goianense currently occupy 1st and 17th spots in the league, with 25 points and 13 points respectively after 12 matches.

It was an impressive opening from Goianense, when Luan Garcia gave Goianense the lead, 29 minutes in. However, the good fortune didn’t last for long. An equalizer from Ze Rafael at the 42 minute mark brought Palmeiras level. The momentum was now with Palmeiras, who then scored again through a goal from Gustavo Gomez, 44 minutes in to establish a 2-1. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a second effort from Gustavo Gomez just before halftime, to take a 4-1 lead into half time.

Goianense took the initiative in the second half, when Diego Churín found the net, at 79 minutes, leaving the final score at 4-2.

Substitutions for Palmeiras included Wesley, Breno, Eduard Atuesta, Gabriel Menino and Mayke for Dudu, Gabriel Veron, Gustavo Scarpa, Danilo and Luan Garcia, repectively. Goianense brought on Airton, Arthur Henry, Lucas Eduardo Lima da Silva, Leo Pereira and Edson, to replace Luiz Fernando, Jefferson, Jorginho, Marlon Freitas and Gabriel Baralha.

The referee booked Danilo and Ze Rafael from Palmeiras. Goianense had the worst of it though, with Diego Churín seeing yellow, and Arthur Henry then sent off with a red.

Palmeiras will next travel to São Paulo, while Goianense will face Juventude at home.
