Independiente 2-1 Estudiantes: Too little too late for Estudiantes at the Libertadores de America

Estudiantes La Plata fell to an away defeat at the hands of Independiente at Libertadores de America on Tuesday. Independiente were hoping to get something from this game, following a previous defeat to Argentinos Juniors. Estudiantes were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against CA Sarmiento and Aldosivi. Following today’s result, both teams are on 7 points and sit in 5th and 6th places respectively after 4 matches.

After an uneventful first half, Independiente certainly were out of the blocks quickly in the second half, when Leandro Benegas gave Independiente the lead at the 52 minute mark. The momentum was now with Independiente, who then scored again through a goal from Leandro Fernandez after 57 minutes to establish a 2-0. Estudiantes in turn, then responded, at 81 minutes increasing their lead with an effort from Leonardo Godoy and saw the match end 2-1.

Independiente brought on Ivan Marcone, Joaquin Laso and Damian Batallini for Lucas Romero, Lucas Gonzalez and Leandro Fernandez. Estudiantes brought on Alan Marinelli, Aaron Spetale and Luciano Lollo, to replace Brian Orosco, Matias Pellegrini and Leonardo Godoy.

There were bookings for Alex Vigo from Independiente. For Estudiantes, Jorge Rodriguez and Aaron Spetale saw yellow.

Independiente will next play Patronato away, with Estudiantes facing Newell’s Old Boys at home.
